Tuesday, June 5, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Eustis Estate, 1424 Canton Avenue, Milton, Mass.
Join us as we welcome the Poet Laureate of Boston, Danielle Legros Georges, to the Eustis Estate. Through the exploration of iconic and influential pieces of literature, Legros Georges asks audiences to consider the historic and evolving definition(s) of what makes one an American. Her talk begins with the question asked by Frenchman-turned-American Jean de Crèvecoeur in 1782, "What is an American?"
She then delves into how American poets have answered, interpreted, and pushed back against this question, including Phillis Wheatley, Emma Lazarus, Langston Hughes, and poets writing today. Legros Georges asks audiences to question and consider how the American ideals of plurality, multiculturalism, and equality have been reflected in definitions of U.S. citizenship and Americanness.
