Saturday, April 29, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Royall House & Slave Quarters, 15 George Street, Medford, Mass.

Teaching artist Ifé Franklin leads this interactive workshop focusing on the history of enslaved people. Children and adults create small structures reminiscent of slave cabins to honor the ancestral spirits of Africans who were enslaved throughout colonial America and for nearly a century after our nation's founding. Using the artist's Indigo Project for inspiration, participants work with cotton fabric, some dyed with indigo -- both crops grown by enslaved people on Southern plantations -- as well as cowrie shells, raffia, beads, and buttons to creatively interpret these dwelling spaces.

This workshop takes place at the Royall House and Slave Quarters museum in the only remaining slave quarters building in the North.
