Using Beacon Hill as a backdrop, this walking tour covers events in Boston leading up to and during the Civil War. Discover the hidden history of Massachusetts’ own struggles in the war of North vs. South as seen through the eyes of residents of Beacon Hill. Hear the stories of Frederick Douglass, Robert Gould Shaw, and Julia Ward Howe, as well as lesser known but important local figures. The tour takes an inside look at local politics, the recruiting of soldiers and sailors, the role of charitable and volunteer organizations on the home front, and Boston businesses' contributions to the war effort. Private group tours also available by appointment.
